First Chapter Literacy Tip

What: Retell and Discuss

After you finish reading a story with your child, take a minute to retell the story together. Talk about the beginning, middle, and end of the story. Look back at the pictures and talk about what was happening in the images. Engage your child in a discussion about what they might have done if they were a particular character or what other solutions they could think of to a problem that arose in the story. 


Why: A quick retelling or discussion of a story after reading can improve a child’s comprehension and establish a habit of thinking about the books they read.
