Parent, Caregiver and Educator Workshops -
First Chapter Workshops is a program that offers support to families to encourage reading, talking, singing, and playing with their young child. Support takes the form of in-person workshops where early education and child development experts model strategies, offer ideas and insights, and provide a chance for families to ask questions and meet other parents. All workshop participants receive free children's books. The workshops are targeted for specific age ranges, beginning with prenatal and moving through age 8.
Literacy Text Tips -
Participants can opt-in to receive text tips 1-3 times per week. Texts include simple ways parents and caregivers can read and talk to their little one and how to create a literacy-rich home to help improve their child’s chance at school readiness and success. There is no cost to participate in the text program other than normal carrier fees. Participants may opt-out at any time.
First Chapter Programs
Understanding that parents are a child's first teacher, First Chapter equips families with literacy tools, empowering parents to provide that essential education every child needs to enter school ready to learn. For that reason, First Chapter's activities focus on educating expectant parents and families with children ages 0 - 5 on simple ways to incorporate language and literacy activities into their child's life daily from birth.
Book Corners -
First Chapter's Book Corner pilot program will create a bookcase stocked
with new and gently used children books at pediatric clinics and other waiting rooms.
For children, these book corners will be stocked with free books for them to discover and take home and varied literacy materials to explore while in the waiting room. For parents, First Chapter will offer a comprehensive guide that includes information about development, a FAQ about early learning and literacy, and a collection of our best tips and strategies.
